For our latest installment of “The Whole 9” we chopped it up with L.A.-native Brandon Marquiste. The Lynwood emcee recently dropped a new video Get Out Yo Feelings. Check out the interview below, and for more on him, check out his website.
the9elements: How did you get your start rapping?
Brandon Marquiste: Well I was always into music and musically inclined at a young age but I started rapping like my senior year of high school after my grandfather past and quitting basketball. Me turning to the streets with no male figure for a role model anymore, I had found my love for music and that became my new happy place. So I would just write rhymes about the things I was going through.
T9E: What advice do you have for upcoming rappers?
BM: Don’t follow the trend … be the trend! Stay true to yourself and be original. go for what you believe in because everyone is not gonna be in agreement with what you’re doing. But the most important thing is to Never Give Up! Keep pushing towards your dream no matter what.
T9E: Tell us about life in Lynwood.
BM: Lynwood is just like all the other cities. You got the good and the bad.. some areas is better than others.. everyone has choices and basically it is what you make it. I love my city! I feel like Lynwood is one of the best cities in California and it’s often overlooked … but I’m here to change all that and put us on the map in a real way.
T9E: Los Angeles Hip Hop is on a winning streak right now, and has been for quite a while. What do you think is key to this?
BM: The west is coming back together! We starting to support one another to help each other rise. LA is like one of the main birth cities in Hip Hop. gangster rap etc… Eazy E, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, all originated right here In Los Angeles County. And now the Hip Hop scene is shifting back to where this gangsta shit started.
T9E: What’s the number one thing you want people to know about Brandon Marquiste?
BM: That I’m here to stay and make my mark in this music game! I have a story to tell that’s like no other. I have my own style and originality that will set me apart from others doing it! I’m here to put my city on the map! I’m the next best thing and soon the whole world will see! I am music and music is me!
