Following 2016’s Uncommon Knowledge and 2017’s Abstractions, K.A.A.N. strikes again with his latest full length effort, Subtle Meditation. The 13 track LP marks the third collaborative effort with his label partners, Redefinition Records. The seasoned emcee explores a myriad of thought provoking subjects which include America’s social climate, the pursuit of success, colonialism, mental health, creativity, failure and self destruction, to name a few.
The Maryland native has been acclaimed over the year for his lyricism and his artistic bravery found throughout his prodigious catalog, however, “Subtle Meditation” best represents K.A.A.N.’s comfort zone. From song concepts and structure, to the album’s vintage production aesthetic handled by the Ukrainian’s Smuff tha Quiz, along with legendary beatsmiths such as The 45 King (Jay Z, Queen Latifah, Eminem) and K-Def (L.O.T.U.G., Ghostface, Marley Marl), K.A.A.N. tapped straight to the source of the era that forged his passion for Hip Hop.
Helping to take the sonic experience to a higher level, the album’s executive producer, Damu the Fudgemunk, not only co-produced, but also mixed, mastered and added his turntable expertise to every track. What we’re left with is a 41 minute journey that K.A.A.N. admits to being one of his favorite releases to date.
In an age where disposable music is the norm, K.A.A.N.’s latest effort challenges these standards. And although the title may insinuate a more calming listening experience, the content is nothing short of high octane bars and vintage beats, placing a colorful exclamation point at the end of a very fast paced year in Hip Hop. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to K.A.A.N.’s music, this project will capture your attention and standout for years to come.
To celebrate the album launch, Subtle Mediation is available now through all major DSPs, as well as a limited edition neon vinyl swirl, that’s accompanied with a full color florescent jacket designed by the great, Joe Buck (De La Soul is Dead).
