Our latest installment of The Whole 9 takes us north of The Bronx, to White Plains where he chopped it up with local spitter Shorts. He recently released his new EP Long Story Short. Check out the interview below, and for more on the homie, check him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
the9elements: What’s the biggest lesson you learned from the creation of Long Story Short?
Shorts: I’d probably have to sum that up by saying consistency gets you what patience has prepared you for. Also, we get so caught up in our thoughts that we tend to prolong completing things. I learned being strategic is a must but with certain situations you gotta just cross that bridge when you get there and as long as you’re prepared for whatever it may be on your end (failure, humiliation etc) there should be no worries.
T9E: The album seems to follow a story of sorts. What is the genesis and how did it come together?
S: It’s crazy because the project really just came together by itself. It’s not like I was looking for a this type of record or a that type of record. As I was in the writing process to myself I was like, “wow these joints kinda mesh well together”. And if I throw a skit or two here & there they’ll connect even better. So with that said all my music is based off real life events and I’m truly a firm believer in the phrase, “it was already written.”
T9E: What do you think Hip Hop will sound like in ten years?
S: I don’t know, that’s difficult to answer being that there are so many lanes in Hip Hop. There’s always gonna be a majority doing a similar/current sound, but then you got dudes killing at what they do w/a strong fan base who sound nothing like the majority.
T9E: Who do you think is the most influential artist of the last year and why?
S: Damn I’m not putting much thought into this (laughs), but I’m gonna have to say Drake… he on fire right now like it’s literally his time and he been in this position where he can really do no wrong for a minute now.
T9E: Are you religious or spiritual? How does that affect your day to day?
S: I believe in God and that He’s the creator of the universe. I have my personal connection with Him. I pray, give thanks and keep faith!
