The sports world was turned on it’s ear, when Jay-Z announced that he was starting Roc Nation Sports and that his first signing was NY Yankee second baseman Robinson Cano, who fired Baseball mega-agent Scott Boras to do so. With Cano scheduled to be a free agent at the end of this season, some are now questioning not only the move, but the motive behind it. More after the jump.
Disgraced former Baseball player and side show Jose Canseco tweeted that Robinson Cano “just gave the Yankees $100 million” for making the move, and some are agreeing with him. “Canseco is probably dead on,” said the agent, who spoke to the NY Daily News on condition of anonymity. “Jay-Z doesn’t know shit about baseball. You don’t hire a real estate agent to do neurosurgery.”
Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports, will be partnered with Creative Artists Agency Sports, who have just negotiated a 9-year, $167 Million contract for San Fransisco Giants catcher Buster Posey, along with lucrative deals for Ryan Braun, Matt Cain and Ryan Zimmerman, so it’s obvious that Jay is under the wing of a well respected agency, and of course Jay-Z won’t be directly negotiating Cano’s next contract.
But, the agent also tells the NY Daily News, that he thinks Cano changed agencies because he was intoxicated by “celebrity perfume.” “Celebrity in baseball comes from performance, but Robinson is looking at Jay-Z and Beyoncé to make him a celebrity,” he said. “He is being naïve. The story now is about Jay-Z, not Robinson.”
